Working together: experiences of people with aphasia as co-researchers in participatory health research studies

Background: People with aphasia have been engaging research in a variety of ways. There are few descriptions how they involved participatory methodologies and even fewer reports describe their perspective on participating as co-researchers.Aims: To explore the experiences reflections two people aphasia, BG MG, being studies co-researchers – Conversation Partner Programme Evaluation Project Friendship Aphasia Project.Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted about co-researchers. Data analysed thematically.Outcomes & Results: Retrospective reflection by MG resulted five interlinked themes: Involvement processes: “More than guinea pig”Group process: “It’s us not them … completely different”Flexibility creativity: new ways to co-generate co-analyse dataPersonal transformations transformative actions arising from research: “The tortoise wants be like hare again”Enhancing quality meaningfulness: “You get more things out it for people”Conclusions: Participatory encourage support non-traditional methods boundary crossing relationships between academic researchers aphasia. BG’s recommendations suggest possibilities enhancing collaboration equality within our practices.
